Bird Brains

Hanging outside the window of the loft is a bird feeder. I put it there
because I find it pleasant to take the occasional break from my literary labors
to watch the antics of my winged neighbors.

My observations have helped me to learn a lot about the avian race. I am sad
to learn that they are a greedy and possessive tribe. Very seldom does one bird
allow another bird to eat at the same time, although there is room for half a
dozen birds on the feeder. When one is eating and another arrives, a brief but
bloodless battle ensues with the victor granted eating privileges while the
other must sulk in a tree until the first is sated and leaves.

No wonder the term "bird brain" came into vogue- how stupid is it
for them to be this way! There must be five pounds of food in that feeder, more
than ten birds could eat in ten lifetimes. If that runs out, there is a fifty
pound bag in the garage and, should that ever be exhausted, there are literally
TONS more of the stuff within five miles of  here, all cheap and all easily
obtainable. The feeder has never been empty as I take great care to keep my airborne
friends well fed. How stupid these birds are, acting like they have to guard
every seed with their very lives lest they starve. How idiotic to waste energy
fighting and squabbling when there is more than plenty for all and they could
live their lives in fat and happy peace. I can clearly understand why man has
dominance over the Earth and why the beasts have been put under us.

Such silliness is entertaining only for a short while and it soon grows
boring. My musings ended and my desire for something more serious provoked, I
turn to the television to find out the latest on the world
situation.
